"I'm not your father's attorney."
I said that to a potential client shortly after I founded Indie Business Law. We were meeting at a coffeehouse to talk about a business they wanted to start, and in a tone suggesting side-eye, they expressed surprise that I wasn't wearing a suit. I smiled, and said, "Well, I'm not your father's attorney."
The client did not hire me and I was OK with that because I knew we wouldn't be a good fit. Since my practice is as much about relationships as it is about the law, fit matters.
So what do you need to know about me? You already know I went to law school and passed the Washington Bar or you wouldn't be here. You probably know I work exclusively with small businesses and nonprofits. You might also know that I'm a transactional attorney, not a litigator.
And sure, these things matter...
...but I think other things matter even more — like the fact that I ran an HIV/AIDS nonprofit in the 90s, and that I'm an artist. I have a special interest in mental health because I lost a friend to bipolar. The LGBTQ+ community is my community. I'm plain-spoken, and a parent, and have an irreverent streak a mile wide. I love karaoke and crosswords, I can't help reading the comments, and I always, always root for the underdog.
I can't guarantee we'll be a good fit, but if you're in the market for a business attorney and like what you've read here, drop me a line. I'd love to talk.
